Dual–axis Storage Tank Integrity Scanner
This two-axis automated scanner was designed to test the integrity of storage tanks.
The system was commissioned by Doosan Babcock on behalf of Babcock Marine at the Rosyth Naval Dockyard in Fife, Scotland, and was designed to carry out inspection of the walls of a set of storage tanks as part of a programme of integrity assessment.
The system consists of a linear and turntable drive carrying ultrasonic transducers located on the end of a pneumatic operated arm that is also equipped with a camera for visual inspection.
It uses 0° probes to measure the thickness of the tank walls and angled beam probes to inspect critical weld areas for internal defects and cracks.
The short movie below shows the scanner in operation during commissioning at Phoenix head office.
TENIS – Nozzle Inspection System
The TENIS scanner was developed to test the primary circuit nozzles within PWR vessels.
This scanner holds ten ultrasonic probes and can scan them axially and circumferentially over the internal surfaces of the nozzle.
Please download the technical article ‘Anyone for Tenis’ for a discussion on the scanner in use.
AXIS – Two Axis Pipe Scanner
The AXIS Scanner has been developed to carry out automated inspection of TIG Welds in stainless steel tubing. It is also capable of detecting and positioning root, cap and mid-wall L.O.F defects in small bore pipes.

CHIM - Channel Head Inspection Manipulator
The Phoenix Channel Head tube plate scanner, CHIM, allows the
inspection of this critical weld in the normally inaccessible area
behind the steam generator support legs.
- Low profile
- Modular
- Unattended operation
- Rapid Setup
EPSOM – Economiser Penetration Scanning Mechanism

The EPSOM Manipulator was designed originally to carry out
automated inspection of a critical weld on the Economiser on the A.G.R
Power Station.
It will operate in a Nuclear Reactor environment at temperatures of up to 50° C

NOZZLE SCANNER
The system is based on a turntable which can be adapted to scan
everything from 100mm diameter nominal bore nozzles to 1600mm shell
welds.
It can carry one or two probes, be used for both TOFD and
conventional pulse echo scans, and uses vacuum or magnetic attachment.

PRIME – Primary Circuit
For Steam Generator hot & cold leg inspection including
transition, pipe to pipe and elbow welds the PRIME manipulator offers:
- Low profile 70mm clearance
- Unique umbilical cassette for unattended operation
- Mounting on pipe or elbow
|
SWIS – Set in (Nozzle) Weld Inspection System
Many of the more experienced in the practice of ultrasonic
inspection appreciate the difficulties associated with the inspection
of nozzle saddle welds.
The Saddle Weld Inspection System (SWIS) simulates the manual
operator’s dexterity in rotating the probe whilst scanning around a
nozzle.

PRIMO – Phoenix remote inspection Mole
For the internal testing of hollow shafts and pipes the PRIMO
systems offer automated inspection using a combination of Multi probe
heads:
- eddy currents
- visual
- surface profile
- ultrasonics

EDDY CURRENT Scanner for the INSPECTION of BOILER TUBES
Designed to test the external surface of the extension tube where the boiler tubes extend outward from the tubeplate. The scanner carries an Eddy Current probe accurately between the tubes and scans the full circumference. |

BOILER HEAD END PLATE SCANNER
Simple low cost low profile scanner which can be adapted for carrying Pulse Echo/ TOFD or Phased Array transducers.
 PRESSURISER SCANNER

APSIS
The Automatic Pressuriser Surge Line Inspection System was specifically designed for use on PWRs. It allows the inspection of transition, austenitic and thermal sleeve welds on the pressuriser surge line and the surge line to primary loop welds using conventional and TOFD techniques. APSIS can be assembled and dismantled in under 12 minutes and can operate unattended, thus limiting operators’ exposure to radiation.
For more information on the APSIS please contact our sales department.
