Phoenix Inspection Systems is helping to provide ultrasonic testing equipment for the Austrian railways. It is working with ARCHINGER AG of Nuremberg, Germany to supply a system to inspect the axles of railway carriages. Phoenix will provide a lightweight rotating inspection head, which will carry out tests from the hollow bore inside the axle, controlled by a frame attached to the end of the bore. ARCHINGER AG will be responsible for the workstation and the axle feed unit and for fully integrating the components into one easy-to-use system. Bryan Forth, project manager at Phoenix said: "Our lightweight inspection head offers swift, cost-effective testing with up to eight channels for different probe angles." The Austrian rail service currently uses manual testing but plans to convert to automatic methods by early next year. Lutz Lindecke of ARCHINGER AG commented: "We have worked with Phoenix equipment before and been impressed by its performance. We felt its shaft inspection head would be ideal for use on this latest project."
